In 1935, it became the\u00a0Anglo-Iranian Oil Company\u00a0and in 1954\u00a0<b>British Petroleum<\/b>.\u00a0<sup id=\"cite_ref-BPhistory-postwar_10-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-time020610_11-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>In 1959, the company expanded beyond the Middle East to Alaska and it was one of the first companies to strike oil in the\u00a0North Sea.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pgmcapital.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/BP_Helios_logo.svg_.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-17020\" src=\"http:\/\/www.pgmcapital.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/BP_Helios_logo.svg_-225x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.pgmcapital.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/BP_Helios_logo.svg_-225x300.png 225w, https:\/\/www.pgmcapital.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/BP_Helios_logo.svg_.png 240w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>British Petroleum acquired majority control of\u00a0Standard Oil of Ohio\u00a0in 1978. Formerly majority state-owned, the British government privatized the company in stages between 1979 and 1987. British Petroleum merged with\u00a0Amoco\u00a0in 1998, becoming\u00a0<b>BP Amoco plc<\/b>, and acquired\u00a0ARCO\u00a0and\u00a0Burmah Castrol\u00a0in 2000, becoming\u00a0<b>BP plc<\/b>\u00a0in 2001.<\/p>\n<p>It is one of the world&#8217;s seven oil and gas &#8220;supermajors&#8221;,\u00a0whose performance in 2017 made it the world&#8217;s sixth-largest oil and gas company by\u00a0market capitalization, as can be seen from below chart,\u00a0and the\u00a0company with the world&#8217;s twelfth-largest revenue.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pgmcapital.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Screen-Shot-2018-04-14-at-1.06.58-PM.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-17013\" src=\"http:\/\/www.pgmcapital.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Screen-Shot-2018-04-14-at-1.06.58-PM-300x189.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"379\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.pgmcapital.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Screen-Shot-2018-04-14-at-1.06.58-PM-300x189.png 300w, https:\/\/www.pgmcapital.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Screen-Shot-2018-04-14-at-1.06.58-PM-768x485.png 768w, https:\/\/www.pgmcapital.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Screen-Shot-2018-04-14-at-1.06.58-PM.png 885w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As of December 31, 2017, BP had operations in 72\u00a0countries worldwide, produced around 3.6\u00a0million barrels per day (570,000\u00a0m<sup>3<\/sup>\/d) of\u00a0oil equivalent.\u00a0The company has around 18,000\u00a0service stations worldwide.\u00a0Its largest division is BP America in the United States. In Russia BP owns a 19.75% stake in\u00a0Rosneft, the world&#8217;s largest publicly traded oil and gas company by hydrocarbon reserves and production.<\/p>\n<p>BP has a primary listing on the\u00a0London Stock Exchange\u00a0and is a constituent of the\u00a0FTSE 100 Index. It has secondary listings on the\u00a0Frankfurt Stock Exchange\u00a0and the\u00a0New York Stock Exchange.<\/p>\n<h3>OPERATIONS:<\/h3>\n<p>BP operates through three segments: Upstream, Downstream, and Rosneft.<\/p>\n<h4>Upstream:<\/h4>\n<p>The Upstream segment is involved in the oil and natural gas exploration, field development, and production; midstream transportation, storage, and processing; and marketing and trading of liquefied natural gas (LNG), biogas, power and natural gas liquids (NGLs).<\/p>\n<p>This segment also engages in the ownership and management of crude oil and natural gas pipelines; processing facilities and export terminals; and LNG processing facilities and transportation, as well as in NGLs processing business.<\/p>\n<h4>Downstream:<\/h4>\n<p>The Downstream segment is engaged in refining, manufacturing, marketing, transportation, and supply and trading of crude oil, petroleum, petrochemicals products and related services to wholesale and retail customers.<\/p>\n<p>As of December 31, 2015, the Company owned 13 refineries producing refined petroleum products that it supplies to retail and commercial customers. It operates an infrastructure and logistics network that includes pipelines, storage terminals and tankers for road and rail.<\/p>\n<h4>Rosneft:<\/h4>\n<p>Rosneft has assets in various hydrocarbon regions of Russia: West Siberia, East Siberia, Timan-Pechora, Volga-Urals, North Caucasus, the continental shelf of the Arctic Sea, and the Far East. The company has incorporated a variety of energy sources into its revenue stream ranging from oil and gas to bio-fuels. In the immediate future, BP is focusing on continued expansion in gas and oil to accommodate increased market demand but is also recognizing and pursuing energy opportunities in renewable.<\/p>\n<p>Below chart shows a breakdown of the projected energy consumption by 2040.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pgmcapital.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/49095997-15234617491939437_origin.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-17017\" src=\"http:\/\/www.pgmcapital.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/49095997-15234617491939437_origin-300x98.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"196\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.pgmcapital.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/49095997-15234617491939437_origin-300x98.png 300w, https:\/\/www.pgmcapital.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/49095997-15234617491939437_origin-768x250.png 768w, https:\/\/www.pgmcapital.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/49095997-15234617491939437_origin.png 899w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Besides the company&#8217;s activity in bio-fuel, BP is active in Wind Energy, for which it has interests in 14 sites in the US with a net generating capacity of 1,432 MW, making it one of the top wind energy producers in the country.<\/p>\n<p>In January 2018 they formed a strategic partnership with Lightsource to drive growth in solar power development worldwide.<\/p>\n<p>The company is now known as Lightsource BP.<\/p>\n<h4>Dividend:<\/h4>\n<p>BP has consistently been a\u00a0high dividend payer. The company has sustained an increasing dividend yield for the past six years.
