{"id":17994,"date":"2018-11-18T13:59:49","date_gmt":"2018-11-18T17:59:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pgmcapital.com\/?p=17994"},"modified":"2018-11-18T20:46:21","modified_gmt":"2018-11-19T00:46:21","slug":"is-the-sky-falling-for-crypto-currencies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pgmcapital.com\/nl\/is-the-sky-falling-for-crypto-currencies\/","title":{"rendered":"Is the Sky falling for Crypto Currencies?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Dear PGM Capital Blog reader,<\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday, November 14,\u00a0things turned south for crypto currencies, with an average drop of approx. between 10 &#8211; 14 percent of their respective market capitalization.<\/p>\n<h3>INTRODUCTION:<\/h3>\n<p>A\u00a0<b>cryptocurrency<\/b>\u00a0(or\u00a0<b>crypto currency<\/b>) is a digital or virtual\u00a0currency\u00a0that uses cryptography for security.<\/p>\n<p>Many cryptocurrencies are decentralized systems based on\u00a0blockchain\u00a0technology, a distributed ledger enforced by a disparate network of computers.<\/p>\n<p>A defining feature of a cryptocurrency, and arguably its biggest allure, is its organic nature; it is not issued by any central authority.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/VP__lRQt0JA\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><br \/>\nThe first blockchain-based cryptocurrency was\u00a0Bitcoin, which was launched in 2009 by an individual or group known under the pseudonym,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Satoshi_Nakamoto\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Satoshi Nakamoto<\/a>, which still remains the most popular and most valuable.<\/p>\n<p>Today, there are thousands of alternate cryptocurrencies with various functions or specifications. Some of these are clones of Bitcoin while others are\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.investopedia.com\/terms\/h\/hard-fork.asp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">forks<\/a>, or new cryptocurrencies that split off from an already existing one.<\/p>\n<h3>CRYPTOCURRENCIES FROM BOOM TO BUST?<\/h3>\n<p>The\u00a0<b>2018 cryptocurrency crash<\/b><sup id=\"cite_ref-1\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-5\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>\u00a0(also known as the\u00a0<b>Crypto carnage<\/b><sup id=\"cite_ref-6\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-7\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>,\u00a0<b>Bitcoin crash<\/b><sup id=\"cite_ref-8\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>\u00a0and the\u00a0<b>Great crypto crash<\/b><sup id=\"cite_ref-:0_9-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>) is the biggest sell-off of most\u00a0cryptocurrencies\u00a0from January 2018.<\/p>\n<p>After an unprecedented boom in 2017, the price of\u00a0bitcoin\u00a0has fallen by about 65 percent during the one month from 6 January to 6 February 2018.<\/p>\n<p>Subsequently, nearly all other cryptocurrencies also peaked from December 2017 through January 2018, and then followed behind bitcoin.<\/p>\n<p>As can be seen from below table, of mid August 2018, cryptocurrencies have collapsed 80% from their peak in January 2018, making the 2018 cryptocurrency crash worse than the\u00a0Dot-com bubble&#8217;s\u00a078% collapse.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pgmcapital.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/cryptocurrency-market-down-from-ath-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-18000\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pgmcapital.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/cryptocurrency-market-down-from-ath-1-300x203.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"406\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.pgmcapital.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/cryptocurrency-market-down-from-ath-1-300x203.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.pgmcapital.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/cryptocurrency-market-down-from-ath-1.jpg 924w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>CRYPTOCURRENCY BUBBLE?<\/h3>\n<div class=\"thumb tright\">\n<div class=\"thumbinner\">\n<div class=\"thumbcaption\">\n<p class=\"magnify\">Predictions of a collapse of a\u00a0<b>speculative bubble in cryptocurrencies<\/b>\u00a0have been made by numerous experts in economics and financial markets.<\/p>\n<p class=\"magnify\">Bitcoin\u00a0and other\u00a0cryptocurrencies\u00a0have been identified as\u00a0economic bubbles\u00a0by at least eight Nobel laureates in economics.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Professor\u00a0Nouriel Roubini\u00a0of\u00a0New York University\u00a0has called Bitcoin the &#8220;mother of all bubbles.&#8221;<sup id=\"cite_ref-6\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Central bankers, including; former\u00a0Federal Reserve Chairman\u00a0Alan Greenspan and\u00a0investors such as\u00a0Warren Buffett<sup id=\"cite_ref-Buffet_and_Dimon_9-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>\u00a0and\u00a0George Soros<sup id=\"cite_ref-GnMSoros_10-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>\u00a0have stated similar views.<\/p>\n<h3>PGM CAPITAL\u2019s ANALYSIS &amp; COMMENTS:<\/h3>\n<h4>The mother of all bubbles:<\/h4>\n<p>History has proven that all bubbles, from the Dutch Tulip mania in the early 1600 to the dot,com bubble to the current Cryptocurrency bubble, have the same characteristics as can be seen from chart.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pgmcapital.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/FourStagesOfABubble.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-18003\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pgmcapital.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/FourStagesOfABubble.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"454\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Every bubble after they have burst shows a same pattern, for which, after the &#8220;New Paradigm&#8221; 14 percent. These so-called alternative currencies are mined through different techniques and sold to the general public.
