We look at it as the relationships between nations at a political, economic or military level. The risk occurs when there is a threat to the normal relationships between countries or regions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pgmcapital.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/chess-pol-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-19285\" width=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.pgmcapital.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/chess-pol-1.jpg 612w, https:\/\/www.pgmcapital.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/chess-pol-1-300x161.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 612px) 100vw, 612px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Geopolitical risks are on the rise and will play a major role in the years to come, however it can be understood and managed with reasoned foresight and investment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">GEOPOLITICAL RISK AND THE MARKETS:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Geopolitical risks tend to trigger investors to move away from riskier assets like shares and towards perceived \u201csafe\u201d assets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This negatively impacts currencies exchange rates, stock market returns, while government bonds benefit (particularly those with short maturities as they are perceived as the safest).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Investors also shift their money away from small caps stocks and riskier regions such as emerging markets, toward respectively big caps stocks and  developed markets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">THE GEOPOLITICAL RISK INDEX:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Dario Caldara and Matteo Iacoviello construct a monthly index of Geopolitical Risk (GPR Index) counting the occurrence of words related to geopolitical tensions in leading USA and international newspapers, since 1985.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Geopolitical risk is defined whenever that index shoots above the 100 mark, as can be seen here below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pgmcapital.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/gpr-index-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-19298\" width=\"700\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.pgmcapital.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/gpr-index-1.jpg 710w, https:\/\/www.pgmcapital.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/gpr-index-1-300x123.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 710px) 100vw, 710px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">PGM CAPITAL\u2019s ANALYSIS &amp; COMMENTS:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Market attention to global geopolitical risk is ticking up, while on the other hand, attention to European fragmentation has declined from its May peak, as acute risks to integration &#8211; aside from Brexit &#8211; have subsided.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pgmcapital.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Brexit-tekst-beeld_tcm47-382571.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-19307\" width=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.pgmcapital.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Brexit-tekst-beeld_tcm47-382571.jpg 470w, https:\/\/www.pgmcapital.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Brexit-tekst-beeld_tcm47-382571-300x110.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 470px) 100vw, 470px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Market attention to global trade remains elevated, although the U.S.A. and China might be on the brick of reaching a limited deal on the trade deficit and tariffs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Frictions between the U.S.A. and Europe look set to rise as the U.S.A. implements tariffs on EU goods in retaliation for European aircraft subsidies \u2013 and as Europe takes steps to tax U.S.A. tech companies. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement remains under serious consideration by the U.S.A. Congress, but faces headwinds, particularly in the midst of a presidential impeachment inquiry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We see U.S.A.-China competition as structural and long-lasting and is likely to heat up further, as restrictions on Chinese technology expand in scope and intensity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pgmcapital.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/thuongchien4_181531845.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-19309\" width=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.pgmcapital.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/thuongchien4_181531845.jpg 632w, https:\/\/www.pgmcapital.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/thuongchien4_181531845-300x158.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 632px) 100vw, 632px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The impact of geopolitical shocks has historically tended to be more acute when the economic backdrop is weak, is one reason why we see geopolitical risk as a material market factor in 2019 and beyond, against a backdrop of slowing growth and elevated economic uncertainty.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We believe that shares of big caps consumers conglomerates and precious metals providing a potential buffer against risk asset selloffs triggered by geopolitical crises.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Be Greedy When Others are Fearful:<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Brexit fears:<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>BP Plc<\/strong>, one of the seven <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"oil supermajors (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Big_Oil\" target=\"_blank\">oil supermajors<\/a> and UK biggest company by market capitalization has a P\/E ratio of  14 and a dividend yield of 6.3% at 1 year-low, due to the current BREXIT crisis, as can be seen from below chart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pgmcapital.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/BP-one-year-low-1024x401.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-19312\" width=\"700\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.pgmcapital.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/BP-one-year-low-1024x401.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.pgmcapital.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/BP-one-year-low-300x117.png 300w, https:\/\/www.pgmcapital.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/BP-one-year-low-768x301.png 768w, https:\/\/www.pgmcapital.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/BP-one-year-low-130x50.png 130w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The British Pound at all-time low due to the current BREXIT crisis, as can be seen from below chart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pgmcapital.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/GBPUSD-All-time-low-1024x393.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-19313\" width=\"700\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.pgmcapital.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/GBPUSD-All-time-low-1024x393.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.pgmcapital.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/GBPUSD-All-time-low-300x115.png 300w, https:\/\/www.pgmcapital.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/GBPUSD-All-time-low-768x295.png 768w, https:\/\/www.pgmcapital.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/GBPUSD-All-time-low-130x50.png 130w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">CHINA-USA Trade war jitters:<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Industrial and Commercial Bank China<\/strong>, the world&#8217;s  largest bank\u00a0by total assets, deposits, loans, number of customers, and number of employees, has P\/E ratio of 6 and a dividend of 5.12 percent.
